PINE BUSH - A blocked extra point preserved a one-point lead and the Wallkill Panthers hung on against the battling Pine Bush Bushmen to win their first game of the season, 14-13. It was Pine Bush's first home game in two years.
After trailing 7-0 at halftime, the Panthers marched down the field on the first drive of the third quarter in an eight-play drive that culminated in aone-yard touchdown run by Zach Henke. Trevor Kelley'sextra point tied the game at seven with 8:34 left in the third quarter.
Then, after forcing the Bushmen to punt, the Panthers took over on their own 39-yarD-line and started a string of five consecutive runs of at least 11 yards to reach the Bushmen 3-yard-line at the end of the fourth quarter. AJ Calvo punched the ball in from four yards out and Kelley's kick gave the Panthers a 14-7 lead.
The Bushmen, however, answered on the next drive. Sean Crofoot set the Bushmen up at their own 41-yard-line after a 22-yard punt return and Chris LaPenna sprinted around the right side on a counter for a 49-yard touchdown run. But the Panthers' blocked LaPenna's extra point and hung onto a 14-13 lead.
The Bushmen got the ball back with 6:17 left in the game and marched to the Wallkill 27 before the drive stalled on a turnover on downs. Pine Bush also got the ball back with 46 seconds remaining but were UNable to get into the end zone.
Class A Wallkill (1-3) will visit Cornwall on Friday night and Class AA-l Pine Bush (0-4) will go to Kingston on Saturday afternoon.

PINE BUSH - It figured to be a close game, and that's exactly what it was.
This game boiled down to two very different halves and a blocked extra point try.
Pine Bush came out in the first half sky high. Playing at home for the first time in over a year and in front of a very big and noisy crowd, Pine Bush seemingly took control of the game early. After Wallkill had deferred after winning the coin toss, Pine Bush marched down the field. On third and 5, Sean Crofoot took a toss sweep for 22 yards and a first down at the Panther 41. Crofoot then took an option pitch from Bobby Moorehead for another 10 yards. After an incompletion and a short run, Crofoot rumbled 25 yards with another pitch to the Wallkill 2 yard line. Crofoot finished the drive, scoring from 2 yards out. Chris LaPenna's kick was good, and Pine Bush led 7-0.
On the Panthers first possession, two short runs netted 5 yards. On third and 5, QB Zach Henke hit Rob Gomez for 32 yards and a first down at the Pine Bush 28. But the drive stalled after two short runs and a 10 yard loss on a botched screen pass.
Pine Bush took over at its own 20 after the punt sailed into the end zone. This time, Wallkill stopped the Bushmen. A short run and two incomplete passes forced Pine Bush to punt. Lapenna's punt rolled dead at the PB 48 as the first quarter expired.
PB 7, Wallkill 0.
Wallkill could do nothing on three plays. On third down Chris Romaine sacked Henke to force a punt.
On their third possession, Pine Bush managed one first down on a 14 yard LaPenna run. But a motion penalty, an incomplete pass and a short run, and the Bushman punted again.
From their own 12, Wallkill was determined to pound the ball out of danger. Henke ran for 3, then Paulo Alvear ran for 6, inches short of a first down. After Henke snuck for the first down, A.J. Calvo ripped off 16 yards and a first down. On third down, Henke hit Steve Rola for 10 and another first down. A unpopular (on the Pine Bush side) pass interference call gave Wallkill a first on the PB 36. However, a loss on a reverse and an incomplete pass, followed by an interception by LaPenna closed out the first half with Pine Bush leading 7-0.
For the half, Pine Bush rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries led by Crofoots 60 yards and a TD. Wallkill was held to 26 yards rushing on 15 carries. Henke was 2-5 for 42 yards and an interception.
With the start of the second half , however, you might have thought the teams switched uniforms at halftime.
Starting at their own 25, Alvear ran for 7, then Henke hit Gary Lake for 8 and a first down. Then the Wallkill running game exploded. Calvo went 18 on a toss, then 16 on a trap. After Alvear added 15 yards, Calvo ran the trap again for 10 yards to the one. Henke snuck in, Trevor Kelly's extra point was good, and the game was tied at 7.
Momentum clearly was shifting Wallkill's way. The Panthers stopped Pine Bush without a first down and took back over at their 40. Henke hit Gomez for 10, and Calvo ran for 12 and 13 more to the Bushman 25. Alvear went 11 yards to the 14, then Calvo 12 to the 2 yard line. The third quarter ended with the score tied at 7, but the Panthers at the Pine Bush 2 yard line
After Calvo lost three, he took a pitch from Henke, only to drop it. Somehow, he scooped it up on the run and scored from 5 yards out. The kick was good, and turned out to be a bigger kick than it might have appeared.
Score Wallkill 14- Pine Bush 7 beginning the fourth quarter.
On Pine Bush's next possession, two runs netted a first down at the Panther 49. One play later, LaPenna hit the line and appeared stopped for a moment. However, he bounced outside, sprinted down the sideline a scored from 49 yards out to make it Wallkill 14, Pine Bush 13. On the ensuing extra point try, Wallkill sent a big rush up the middle and made huge block to maintain the lead.
It turned out to be the winning play. Wallkill was stopped on their next possession and punted to Pine Bush.
PB took over at their own 48. Crofoot ran for a first down, then an unsportsmanlike penalty on Wallkill gave Pine Bush a first down on the Panther 17.
Lapenna lost 7 to the 24, and Crofoot picked up just one. A fumbled snap lost 2 and the Bushmen turned the ball over on downs.
Pine Bush would get the ball one more time, but with only one minute to play. They were unable mount a real threat and fell one, excruiting point short.
Calvo rushed for 88 yards in the second half on 13 carries and a TD. Alvear rushed for 33 yards 3 second half carries. Wallkill outrushed Pine Bush 122-56 in the second half.
Pine Bush 141 yards on 27 carries
Lapenna 9-75, TD
Crofoot 9-73, TD
Wallkill 156 yards on 25 carries
Calvo 20-117 TD
Alvear 7-40
Henke 4-12 60 yards, 1 int.
