SAWYERS GET FIRST WIN BY TOPPING WALLKILL
WALLKILL - The Saugerties Sawyers had only one Section IX Class A victory in 4 years under Ed Cook. They left Robinson Field at Wallkill with their second Friday night, a 24-6 victory.
The Wallkill offense handed the Sawyers a gift on its first posession as Zach Henke fumbled at his own 15. Three plays later Jared Borelli rushed into the endzone from 5 yards out.
Leading 10-0 after Evan Hunt's third field goal of the season, a 38 yarder, Saugerties extended when QB Justin Fredenburg connected with Travis Mills for a 69 yard score. Fredenburg injured his ribs on the play after being drilled to the ground following the throw. He sat out the remainder of the half but said he was "O.K." after the game and did play the entire second half.
Down 17-0 at the half, Wallkill recovered a Saugreties fumble on the opening kickoff but then turned it back over on another Henke fumble. Saugerties then marched down the field and Fredenburg connected with Mills again, this time from 6 yards out.
Henke did score the Panthers' first touchdown of the year, a 26 yard run in the 4th quarter.
Wallkill turned the ball over four times in the game, Saugerties three times.
Borelli finished the game with 104 Yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. Fredenburg was 7-for-13 for 129 yards and 2 TD's.
Saugerties(1-2, 1-0 Class A) will visit Port Jervis in week 4. Wallkill(0-3, 0-1) will host Pine Bush.
