MONTGOMERY - For seven years, the Battle of the Wallkill Valley helmet has found a home at Wallkill High School. Now,for the first time since its creation, it is back at Valley Central High School as the Vikings defeated the Panthers here,23-0.
After a scoreless first half, the Vikings put the first points on the board on the second play of the second quarter. After the Panthers pushed Chris Elia a yard back on third down, Matt Miller kicked a 23-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. It was his second FG of the young season.
After forcing the Panthers to punt with about six minutes left in the second quarter, Elia capped off a five-play, 46-yard drive with a 24-yard bullet in the end zone that Mike Donohue jumped to reel in. Miller's extra point was blocked and the Vikings led 9-0 at halftime.
With about five minutes left in the third quarter, Wallkill coach Dave Der Cola elected to go for a fourth-and-one at the Wallkill 33. The Vikings push stuffed the run and they took over on the Panthers' 31. Elia then capped off the six-play drive when he snuck into the end zone. Miller's kick gave Valley Central a 16-0 lead.
Stephen Udeke added a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:48 left in the game and Miller converted the extra pointfor a 23-0 Vikings win.
Valley Central, off to its first 2-0 start in recent memory, will go to Washingtonville on Friday to open their Section 9 Class AA Division II schedule. Meanwhile Wallkill, 0-2, still hasn't put a point on the board. The Panthers will host Saugerties on Friday night.
